Wastewater Treatment
Treatment::
The facility currently treats estimated flows of approximately 9,000 gallons per day estimated average daily flow. This wastewater flow consists primarily of domestic waste coupled with commercial wastes generated by local businesses and the Benson Elementary School. The average daily flow derives from approximately 38% of the total population of the Town of Benson served by the facility while the rest of the Town must rely on “onsite” systems (septic systems) for their wastewater treatment needs.
Analysis::
Analysis of the incoming waste as well as the final treated and disinfected effluent is performed routinely by the operator in the facility laboratory located within the Town Offices. More extensive analysis is performed by an outside contract laboratory service. These analysis insure that the final effluent meets or exceeds the Agency of Natural Resources, Department of Environmental Conservations requirements set forth in the facilities discharge permit. This insures a quality effluent and preserves the Towns commitment to a clean environment.
Operations::
Currently one part time operator performs the operation of the facility, collection system, associated peripherals and laboratory analysis in approximately 15 hours per week. A very supportive and active Select Board participates in several aspects of the facility operation as well as the many other functions within town.
Recent News::
Over the last several months many changes have occurred at the facility. Stantec Engineering has been working on an extensive twenty-year evaluation of the facility and has made recommendations for improvements to the facility. A biosolids application permit is in process to further enhance the operation of the facility by allowing the extraction of residual biosolids for beneficial re-use rather than re-fuse. The extraction of the biosolids will allow for more effective treatment of the wastewater and allow for the production a better quality effluent.
Operational changes, record keeping and laboratory analysis have been the emphasis of recent months. Computer generated report forms are in place and the laboratory has been revisited and updated. Over all record keeping and filing have an updated format. An aggressive approach to operations and maintenance has been implemented resulting in an aesthetically appealing facility as well as a well-operated and maintained facility.
